What To Do in Case of an Accident

Have you been in an accident? Here is what to do:
- Stop at the scene no matter how minor the damage may be. A failure to stop can result in criminal consequences.
- Render aid to anyone who is injured to the extent that you are qualified. Do not move a severely injured person.
- Call 911 and report the accident to the police. If needed, call for medical assistance.
- If another vehicle is involved in the accident, gather and write down the following information:
- Name, address, and phone number of the driver and owner of the vehicle.
- Make, model, and color of the vehicle.
- License plate number and name of insurance company of the vehicle.
- Full names and phone numbers of any witnesses.
- Take photos of the vehicles and their positioning in the roadway.
- Do not discuss the crash with anyone other than the police.
- Notify your insurance company of the crash as soon as possible, but do not give any written or recorded statements. (Many insurance companies have specific deadlines for reporting and/or submitting claims.)
- Take photos to document injuries, preserve other evidence, and make notes of the facts while fresh in your mind.
